There are many questions with such options on our exams, so developing questions that are not only provide real learning but provide accuracy feedback is a challenge. The focus of this post is providing feedback on how to write multiple-choice questions that are both accurate and informative. When I am referencing accuracy, I’m not only talking about selecting the correct answer, but I’m also talking about selecting the correct answer from the correct answer choices.
Note that there are a number of ways to ask a question that provides feedback on how to select the correct answer from a list of four. The simplest way to create a question that provides feedback is to have the student identify the correct answer from a list of four that are in a random order. This is not the best way to write a question. Even if the student identifies the correct answer from the correct answer choices, the question is ambiguous.
For example, you can ask a question in which the student must identify the correct answer from a list of ten to fifteen choices, or you can ask a question in which the student must identify the correct answer from a list of five options. The question would provide the following options:
The list of options is not really a list of options — it’s a list of things that are probable answers. For example, if you’re answering about a virus-detection tool, the list might have options like “Virus-detection tool X,” “Virus-detection tool Y,” “Virus-detection tool Z,” or “Virus-detection tool W.” There are other probable answers, of course, such as “Virus-detection tool Q” or “Virus-detection tool P.” These are not really options because they are not correct, but they are probable answers. And, the test is not testing the student’s knowledge of the virus-detection tool X, Y, Z, W, or Q, but rather the student’s knowledge of the existence of these probable answers.
Choosing options from a list can be a challenge. The options often are a list of things that could be the correct answer. For example, if the question is about a virus-detection tool, the options might be “A, B, C, or D?” The question will ask the students to select the correct answer, and it could be any one of the options. If the options were the names of four computer viruses, the student might be asked to pick the only virus in the list.
